I'm home

I'm home! I was released from the hospital on Friday afternoon. My c-section went very well, and I'm healing fast. I could have gone home earlier, but opted to stay because of Tolan being in the NICU. Friday was the longest allowed by insurance, so I had to be released. It was very strange coming home without a baby, and I had a hard time those first few hours. But Criag and I went back that night to visit with Tolan and I felt much better.
Tolan continues to improve each day. He started out with IV fluids (no bottles of formula), because he couldn't eat and breath at the same time. His breathing was very fast (Tachypnea), about 150 breaths per minute (normal is between 20-60 bpm). And he wasn't getting enough oxygen. So the poor little guy had an IV in his hand and one in his foot, oxygen tubes up his nose and wires everywhere!
He progressed to a mixture of IV fluids and formula fed through a feeding tube up his nose. Then he was able to take on the bottle a little at a time, and they took him off the IV fluid. He's also getting enough oxygen on his own, so the oxygen tubes have been taken out.
When we saw him last night, he looked great! No more feeding tube -- he can do it all by bottle now. He's on a seven day course of antibiotics, and his breathing has dropped to below 100 breaths per minute -- still a bit high, but coming down a little each day.
Craig and I visit him twice a day, and we just think he's the cutest little guy! I can't wait to bring him home to join his family.
Mom's been a great help with the kids and keeping up with the house. She's anxious for Tolan to come home too and be able to help care for him. Thank you, thank you all so much for your prayers -- they're working! My next chemo treatment is June 5th.

Welcome home, Cheri! I'm sure it's nice to be home, but I imagine hard, too, wanting your new baby home with you. I'm glad to hear he's doing better and better. Can't you set up a webcam or something, then we can all watch Tolan every day? Maybe after he gets home.. :)

I am glad to hear that you are healing quickly...I had the experience of NICU when Lexi was born. Yes, coming home without a baby ranks up there as the hardest thing a mom can ever have to do...Lexi was there a week after I came home..we had the same issue with insurance that you mentioned...those car trips back and forth several times a day to visit the baby after a c-section really prove how strong we are as moms !! So glad to see the respiratory rate is down and he is on a bottle now...if it would help to talk to someone who has been thru the same thing, you are welcome to call me ...Lexi is 8 years old now and I still check to make sure she is breathing ok !!! We keep you in our prayers. Love Jessica

Cheri--
I mentioned to your husband on Friday night (at the scout fundraiser) that Tolan couldn't be in a better NICU....my youngest son spent 11 weeks there when he was born....they are the absolute best!!! He is as cute as he can be and I am glad you and he are doing so well! I know we didn't get to know you or your family well before the ward split, but you are such a special spirit.
PS... tell the nurses who were there 3 years ago that you know "Kraig's mom"..that was me :-)

Wonderful news that Tolan is doing better each day. He's a cutie and his brothers' look so happy to be holding another sibling! Can't wait to see more pictures of the newest Sharp. We think of you all everyday. We'll also be thinking good thoughts for you on June 5th. Love, Mhari & all the boys (big and little!)
